Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless legs syndrome, as the name suggests is featured by "restless legs". There is an intense discomfort (sometimes pain) in the legs at night. The discomfort keeps the person awake and forces him to move his legs. Furthermore the discomfort lessens on movement but only to reappear minutes later. This cycle continues. The following day the person feels drowsy and exhausted chiefly due to the lack of sleep.

RLS may be idiopathic (vast majority), or associated with diabetes, renal failure or several other disorders.

Changes in lifestyle such as stopping smoking, reducing alcohol, having a good sleep routine, modest exercises go a long way to reduce the symptoms of RLS. Several simple medications relieve most patients.
